SIMILARITIES BETWEEN TWO RELIGIONS

Islam & Mormonism

by Chris Hohnbaum

September 11, 1857 Mountain Meadows Massacre – 140 men, women, and children massacred by religious zealots. Seventeen children under eight years of age were taken and adopted into Mormonism by Brigham Young. They were auctioned off to the highest bidder and resold as well.

September 11, 2001 World Trader Center disaster. Over 2,800 lives were lost in this attack by religious zealots.

We want to make it clear up front that we are not implying in any way that all or most Mormons are dangerous radicals. Nor do we imply that all or most Muslims are dangerous. People with radical ideas will often use whatever religion they can that will give the most credence to their agendas and justify their actions.

Up until perhaps the last decade, Mormonism was one of the fastest growing religions in the United States. Now, many demographers conclude that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the West. What do these two religions have in common? The similarities are remarkable.

  1. Muhammad and Smith were both visited by an angel that delivered their books, the Book of Mormon and the Koran.
  2. Both were given angelic visions
  3. Both were told no true religion was to be found on earth outside of theirs.
  4. Both claimed to have received the “restored” gospel that was taken from the earth.
  5. Both wrote a book that was inspired by Angels; Gabriel, for Islam and Moroni/Nephi for Mormonism.
  6. Both stated that the books were returned to heaven to be with God.
  7. Both claim their own holy book to be the most correct book on the earth, with no error.
  8. Both Muhammad and Smith claimed to be the prophet of the restoration.
  9. Both claimed to be persecuted due to their faith.
  10. Both were polygamists.
  11. Both borrowed from paganism/polytheism. Muhammad incorporated that polytheistic moon god called "Allah" and "Allah's three daughters" into Islam. Basically Muhammad chose Allah from within 350 known gods that were worshipped in Arabia and proclaimed the moon god to be the greatest and only God. Smith borrowed from a doctrine called "pyramidology," from the Masons, and other magic systems.
  12. Both received "after-the-fact corrective revelations" from God. Islam retracted the satanic verses and Mormonism retracted the divine order mandating polygamy.
  13. Immediately after the deaths of Muhammad and Smith, a fight broke out among "faithful converts" as to who would succeed their deceased leaders.
  14. Both groups were plunged into irreparable division that has endured ever since. Islam and Mormonism both have squabbles among themselves as to which is the one true splinter group of their prophet!
  15. Muslims claim that Jesus and the Apostles were actually Muslims, not Jews. Mormons claim that they are actually Jews from lost tribes, such as Ephraim. (Revelation 2:9 “I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, {but thou art rich} and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.”)
  16. Both religions believe in an order of heavenly kingdoms (Mormons believe in three heavens, Muslims in seven).
  17. Both the Koran and the Pearl of Great Price rewrite the events of Genesis.
  18. Both believe the Angel Garbriel was once a mortal prophet; Mormons believe he was Noah, Muslims believe he was Moses.
  19. Both married very young girls; Muhammad a seven year old, Smith a 14 year old).
  20. Both religions have sects that have broken off from the original teachings.
  21. Both believe “They” are God’s chosen people.
  22. Both wear clothing considered sacred to them; for Muslims, the hijab; for Mormons, the authorized temple garment.
  23. Muslims took the name and symbol of a pagan moon god called Al-illah (Allah). Mormon scholars suggest that the South American pagan god “Quetzalcoatl” was Christ. Joseph Smith stated the same (Joseph Smith History of the Church Vol. 665, pg 776).
  24. Both Muslims and Mormons have preached that the Blacks are damned and can only be servants (Brigham Young Discourses, D&C, Sura 3: 106,107).
  25. The crescent moon adorns every Islamic mosque and lunar cycles determine religious festivals. The moon in phases adorns each LDS Temple on the exterior (See Nauvoo Temple, Salt Lake City Temple, and others).
  26. LDS Noel B Reynolds, BYU Vice President, on behalf of Jeffery Holland, one of the 12 apostles of the LDS Church, stated the following: “There are many important elements on Mormonism though, in which we (Mormons) would feel closer to followers of Muhammad than to the contemporary Christian culture in which we have been located since our beginnings (Mormons and Muslims, 1983 Religious Studies Center BYU, P.8)
  27. Muhammad was told three times by the angel Gabriel to recite; Joseph Smith was visited by Moroni three times, promising that the plates would be given to him to “recite” or interpret.
  28. Both religions believe that the Bible is corrupted and imperfect. Both books (Koran, Book of Mormon) were supposedly written by men with little or no education whatsoever. Consider the following quotes:
    1. "If they say: 'It is your own invention,' say: 'Compose one chapter like it.'" (The Koran, Surah 10, page 67)
    2.  "But if ye cannot make one like unto it, ye are under condemnation if ye do not bear record that they are true." (Doctrine and Covenants 67:4, 6-8)
  29. Joseph Smith stated, “I will be to this generation a second Mohammad” (History of the Church Volume 3 pg 167)
